Design Inspiration: Wingback Chairs

by Star Furniture on February 9, 2012

What has four legs, two arms and a pair of wings?

Wing chairs around the dining table are formal and a little unexpected.

Wingback chairs were designed centuries ago to block cold drafts and excessive fireplace heat. The name comes from the design of the chair, which appears to have “wings” that come out from the back of the chair and usually extend down to the armrests.

A wingback serves as a desk chair in a casual, cottage-style home office.

The once-functional style is now purely aesthetic, and a popular go-to when a room needs a little extra magic. Wingbacks show up in almost every room of the house, and have been modified to almost every design style there is.

We love the way Michelle Hinckley ran a layered scarf under the seat.
