Did you know that humans spend about a third of their life sleeping? That’s a lot of down time, but when your eyes are open, they should have a beautiful bedroom to focus on.

The bed is the focal point of nearly any bedroom, so naturally, the bedding and pillows you select will play an important role in the overall look of your bedroom.

There is a lot you should consider when shopping for “top of bed” items; style, comfort, color and price are among those things. But before you can focus on those details, you should know what the components of the “top of bed” are.

Some items that you’ll find on the average bed include:

Sheets – You should have both a bottom (fitted) sheet and a top sheet that separates you from your comforter, duvet or blanket.

Bedspread – This is a decorative covering that rests a top the bed and sheets. There is also a subcategory called coverlets, which are usually woven (like quilts) and don’t reach the pillows or touch the floor.

Bed Skirt – Mainly decorative, this piece of bedding goes between the mattress and box spring. It hides the box spring and can add more design flair.

Duvet – This is a type of bedding stuffed with down or fibers and is warmer than a simple blanket. A duvet requires a cover, which is handy, because when it comes time to wash, you simply remove the cover and wash it.

Comforter – Filled with fibers or stuffed with down, this bed cover can come in many different designs. It’s usually a major decorative element and does not require a cover.

Sleeping Pillow – Pretty self-explanatory, these are the pillows that you actually sleep on.

Pillowcase – Pillowcases protect your sleeping pillows.

Decorative Pillows – These pillows are more for looks and they also protect your sleeping pillows by being in front of (or on top of) them.

Pillow Sham – Pillow shams are more decorative pillow covers that encase decorative pillows.

Accent Pillows – The main function of these pillows is to complete the look of the bed by providing my color, pattern, texture or shine. The design is directly on the pillow.
