Accessorize Your Home

by starfurniture on October 2, 2013

A room is a blank canvas that begins to come together with the addition of paint, furniture and necessary items. But accessories are like the frame on the masterpiece that you’ve created. Without accessories, a room can seem bare, character-less and un-lived in.

These are some things to keep in mind when choosing accessories for any room in your home:

Choose Items You Love – that reflect your personality and interests
If you’re at a loss about accessorize, consider choosing items that reflect your personality and interests. If you love airplanes for example, I’m not saying to turn your living room into a cockpit, but it’s easy to find tasteful tidbits of aeronautics that you can sprinkle into your décor. One of the best tips regarding accessories that deal with your interests is: don’t go overboard.

Even if you immediately fall in love with an accessory, take a moment to ask yourself what room should it go in and if it would really belong there.

The goal isn’t to fill a room with meaningless nick-knacks. You should really like every piece that you select for your room, and hopefully once the room is pulled together, it will have greater sentimental value.

Avoid Matchy-Matchy Looks
Accessories are a great opportunity to play into the décor you’ve already established in a room. However, accessories can also be a great opportunity to break away from the expected. Look for unique pieces that can contrast against your room. Create visual interest in areas that are lacking personality.

Communicating Theme
If your room is centered on a style theme (ex: modern, French country, seaside, etc.) your accessories can help bolster this theme.  Look for lighting fixtures, pillows, mirrors; clocks, rugs, tabletop items and artwork that can help you tastefully get your theme across.

Don’t Over Think It
Play with textures, sizes, materials, colors, objects, themes, patterns and usability when it comes to choosing accessories. If you keep your house/room in mind when shopping and select objects that work with the room and one another, you can’t go wrong.

It doesn’t matter if your space is full of accessories or carefully and sparsely dotted with objects, as long as it works in the room and reflects your taste, you’ve done well.
