Mattress Myths: Uncovered!

by Star Furniture on October 27, 2014

It’s a fact that sleep is just as important as diet and exercise. It is also a fact that the mattresses of today are using the latest technology to ensure you get that deep sleep that’s so vital to your overall health. These are just some of the facts, which are not to be confused with some of the more popular mattress myths.

Myth #1: A mattress should be used until it’s worn out

myth 1

Changes in the body over time can make a mattress seem less comfortable long before it wears out. An injury, increasing joint pain or even weight gain can be reasons to replace your once supportive mattress. Generally speaking, it is recommended to replace your mattress every 8-10 years. However, the Better Sleep Council also recommends doing a “mattress check” twice a year. Just ask yourself these 4 questions:

  1. Are you sleeping better or worse than you did a year ago?
  2. Are you waking up feeling stiff and sore?
  3. Does your mattress have visible signs of wear and tear?
  4. Would a new mattress improve your sleep?

If you answer “yes” to any of them, it’s time to consider a new mattress.

Myth #2: Over 10 years, your mattress will double in weight

This has yet to be scientifically proven. Even if icky elements, like dust mites, were to accumulate over time, reaching double the weight in 10 years is an exaggeration. Dust mites may not add twice the weight to your mattress but they can be a real nuisance, especially if you or a family member is allergic.   Consider an “allergen-proof” slipcover and be sure to double check that it also protects against dust mites, like the Serta Sleep To Go Mattress Encasement.

Myth #3: Removing the mattress tag means time in the big house

This one has been around for ages – ripping off the dreaded little tag will get you a one-way ticket to the slammer! The truth is once you buy the mattress and you want to remove the tag, you can. According to the U.S. Code, it’s only unlawful to remove the tag prior to the sale and delivery of a pillow or mattress. The tags are there to ensure that the product is new and has never been used. Plus, it holds all of the production information, so if you can’t remember when you bought it, that little tag will be there to help!

When buying a new mattress, it’s always important to know the facts. Star Furniture offers a handy mattress guide to simplify this experience while finding the perfect mattress for you!
