How to Clean Your Outdoor Furniture

by Star Furniture on June 30, 2017

As we soak in the delightful summer weather, there’s always the issue of figuring out how to keep your outdoor furniture looking pristine throughout the season! Whether it’s your new chaise lounge or a sturdy fire pit table, understanding basic maintenance for different types of outdoor pieces will help keep your outdoor furniture looking brand new all year round.

Who wouldn’t want that?

Spots and Stains

I’ve found throughout the summer months, the easiest way to maintain your outdoor pieces in tip-top condition is by hosing the set off occasionally after use to remove any debris. However, you and I both know stains or spots are inevitable, especially if you’re spending time on the patio every weekend.

That being said, fabric cushions most often used for outdoor sectionals or sofas are even more susceptible to spots and stains over time after frequent use. So what’s a girl to do?

Luckily, a go-to remedy for spot cleaning is pretty simple! All you need to do is mix a solution of dish soap with water. Depending on the size of the affected area, you will likely need about ½ a cup of liquid soap (like Dawn) with about one gallon of water. The goal here is to completely saturate the affected area, and scrub thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. You can also use a sponge if you don’t have a cloth (just make sure to stay away from dark-colored sponges that might bleed through). You also want to avoid using any type of abrasive solutions or bleach. After you’re done scrubbing, rinse with water, let air dry and voilà!

It should look good as new. 🙂

Pollen and Pet Hair

Now, onto another set of issues that are fairly common when it comes to maintaining your outdoor furniture: pollen and pet hair.

Pollen is the worst in so many ways. Not only is it the bane of my existence during allergy season, but it also just gets everywhere. Pollen tends to creep over your patio or deck, casting a wide yellow net over your perfectly clean and beautiful outdoor set. It’s not a pleasant sight.

As a preventative measure, covering your luxurious outdoor glider will surely keep the pollen at bay. If you forget to do so (let’s be real, it will happen since we’re human after all), hosing the set off or following the same steps we outlined above for spot treatment should suffice!

For pet hair it’s an entirely different ballgame.

If you have pets then you probably already understand the struggle to keep pet hair off any type of furniture. No worries though! We have a few tricks on how to keep your luxury outdoor furniture free from your pup’s shaggy mane. One way to go about it is by running a pair of damp rubber gloves over the upholstery or fabric surface, which will attract all the hair. Then rinse and repeat. You can achieve the same results with a wet sponge if you don’t own a pair of rubber gloves.

Another method that works is mixing a solution of water and fabric softener. Apply this lightly to the upholstery or fabric cushions, then wipe the hair off effortlessly.

Simple enough, don’t you think? With these basic maintenance tips, you can make sure the quality of your outdoor set remains flawless and pet hair free all year round. 🙂
