We've all been there. You're ready to revamp part of your home, but when the time comes to choose paint colors, furniture, and accessories, you simply can't move forward. Even for the most seasoned home decorators, periods of feeling uninspired are bound to happen from time to time.

The good news is that these phases don't last forever. Still, shaking them off isn't always easy. Knowing how to get your creative juices flowing again can make all the difference in putting together stylish, functional living spaces.

If you're struggling to tackle a design project or two, the experienced team at Star Furniture can help. By working with an experienced designer and having a few tricks up your sleeve, you can ignite your creativity to curate a space that's designed to your liking in no time. Check out these 10 interior design tips to light your creativity when you fall into a decorating slump.

1. Embrace Nature

When it comes to finding inspiration for decorating your home, there's no better place to look than the great outdoors. It's no secret that spending time outside can have a therapeutic effect on our bodies and our minds, helping people of all ages to feel more energized and refreshed.

The best part is that you don't have to undergo an over-the-top outdoorsy experience to reap the creative benefits of embracing nature. Taking your dog for a walk around the neighborhood or visiting the Houston Botanic Garden may be all it takes to spark countless design ideas

Spending time outside can also provide plenty of inspiration to use within your home. Incorporating natural elements into your indoor spaces is an easy way to give your home a contemporary, inviting atmosphere. Potted plants, natural materials, and earthy colors found outdoors can all bring the calming influence of nature into your interior spaces.

2. Artistic Exploration

Being able to pair furnishings together in a way that's thoughtful, balanced, and enticing is a skill that gets easier and more impactful with experience. Professionally trained interior designers cultivate this skill, and you can too. With a bit of time, attention and desire, each of us can channel our "inner designer" via artistic exploration.

What better way to harness the creativity that's necessary to build beautiful living spaces than to explore art styles in a gallery or museum? Viewing fresh perspectives of colors, shapes, and designs may help inspire you to mix things up in your own home. Our design experts recommend getting inspired with a trip to the Rienzi Mansion!

On the other hand, engaging in creative endeavors of your own is another great option to help you feel inspired. Painting, arranging a lovely centerpiece for your dining room table, or breathing new life into your garden with fresh flowers can help you get in touch with your expressive side.

3. Travel for Inspiration

There's something about traveling to a new place that can open your mind in a way that nothing else can. Immersing yourself in a different culture is a surefire way to appreciate architecture, food, and decor that you may not have thought much about before. Whether you travel across your state, country, or the world, keep an eye out for inspirations that you can welcome into your own home when you return.

Like the notable buildings and homes you encounter along your journey, the boutique hotels and luxury resorts you spend time in can also be an excellent source for design ideas. Even if you don't stay in luxurious hotels, having lunch in their restaurants or sauntering through their lobbies can certainly give you plenty of beautiful features to admire.

Be sure to take note of all of the high-end accommodations that make your hotel stays feel special, including fabrics, color schemes, and furniture styles. Pro tip: Take pics on your phone to give yourself a clear visual when you're ready to translate your luxury travel experiences into your personal home decor.

4. Color Palette Exploration

If you're tired of using the same old color scheme in every room of your home, you're not alone. Most homeowners gravitate to a few specific colors, then have a difficult time breaking away from them when it's time to redecorate. If this is the case for you, do yourself a favor by getting out of your comfort zone and playing with different color combinations.

Choosing Colors for Your Home

To begin your new color palette exploration, start by looking around your current living spaces. What do you see? If your home is adorned in neutrals from head to toe, experimenting with bold colors can help your home feel vibrant and fresh.

Alternatively, embracing a monochromatic aesthetic with a single-color scheme can help give your home an elegant, style-forward look. To take this design approach to the next level, be sure to play with shades and different tones of whatever color you use to achieve depth like a pro.

Don't know where to begin in changing up the colors of your living spaces? Working with a trusted interior designer at Star Furniture can help you determine which colors would work best in your home.

5. Furniture Layout Redesign

Sometimes, a room can have all the right furnishings, but they happen to be arranged in a way that takes away from its overall style or functionality. Taking the time to reimagine how you might arrange the pieces in your home can help you create layouts that are more practical and visually appealing. Rearranging furniture is a simple step that can have a big impact on the overall feel of a space.

For rooms that have unusual shapes or specific functional needs, decorating with traditional furniture can be tricky. To ensure that you achieve the ideal look and functionality you have in mind, investing in a custom furniture solution may be the way to go. Once you have the right bookcase, desk, or other piece you need for your unique space, the fresh design direction you crave will likely be made clear.

6. Texture and Fabric Play

You don't have to do a complete overhaul of your living spaces to make them feel fresh and inviting. The right fabrics can make any room feel luxurious and interesting. The secret to using fabrics like a professional designer is not only to choose ones that feel fabulous, such as silk, velvet, and faux fur. It's also important to utilize fabrics with different textures. Combining surfaces that are smooth with ones that are textured can help you achieve the depth that helps a room feel well-balanced.

Replacing your solid fabrics and wallpaper with patterned ones can also give your home effortless style and visual appeal. Adding patterned throw pillows to your sofa, detailed curtains in your bedroom, or an eye-catching wallpapered accent wall in your dining room are easy steps that can breathe new life into your living spaces.

7. Lighting Innovation

Looking to light up your creativity? Decorating with statement lighting fixtures is a good place to start. Taking the time to ensure that your living spaces are well-lit will help you stay in a positive, productive, and creative mindset. Who doesn't feel better in a space that's bright and inviting?

Don't take the lighting in your home for granted. Improving your lighting plan can instantly elevate the ambiance of any area of your home. You can't go wrong with modern chandeliers or chic pendant lights that are sure to pack a punch in every room from your dining room to your home office.

Along with decorating with attractive light fixtures, the way you use the lighting in your home can also impact the ambiance of any room in your house. When you're striving to create a specific mood, using the appropriate lighting can make all the difference. For instance, table lamps with soft, warm light can create a bedroom that's tranquil and relaxing. Likewise, bright overhead lighting is essential in your kitchen and bathroom.

Lighting shouldn't be the sole light source for any area of your home. Combining natural and lighting is the best approach to make your home feel spacious and inviting. With this in mind, be sure to decorate your primary living spaces in a way that maximizes natural sunlight as much as possible.

8. Technology Integration

Like it or not, technology has become a common staple in modern interior design. From surround sound speakers to lighting and temperature control, so many features of your living spaces can be controlled with the click of a button, oftentimes through an app on your phone. These customizable smart home solutions can certainly enhance the style and convenience of your home, helping you achieve the perfect ambiance no matter what the occasion may be.

Technology can also help light your creative spark when you're feeling stuck or uninspired when decorating. The internet can be an invaluable tool to help you discover new design trends, find examples of home decor you like, and browse through furnishings without even getting off your couch. Be sure to check out social media sites and online furniture stores from trusted experts like Star Furniture to find the latest in home decor and get back in tune with your inner decorator.

9. Personal Reflection Spaces

Everyone needs a place in their home where they can recharge their batteries. Between work obligations, family responsibilities, and the busyness of life, it can be difficult to find a quiet place to rest and reflect. If you don't already have an area of your house that feels like a personal oasis, it's worth the time and effort it takes to create one.

Designing a spot in your home that's made specifically with relaxation and self-reflection in mind will help you make personal time and self-care a priority on a regular basis. Comfy furniture, scented candles, and cozy accessories, such as pillows, rugs, and black-out curtains, can help create a space that you look forward to relaxing in.

Along with benefitting your mental health and well-being, spending time in a serene space is an effective way to reinvigorate your creative spark. After all, who doesn't feel more productive, inspired, and energized after having some much-needed alone time?

10. Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

Just as everyone's creative style and decorating technique are unique, the factors that encourage creativity and inspiration are also different for each individual. While visiting an art museum or tackling an art project may help inspire one person, taking the time to self-reflect or travel to a new place may be a more effective approach for another.

If you're struggling to bring a decorating project to fruition or don't know where to begin in terms of revamping an outdated room in your home, don't be discouraged. Leaning into your creativity by experimenting with color, rearranging furniture, and browsing the internet can help you get in touch with your interior designer. When in doubt, consulting an interior designer at Star Furniture can provide you with plenty of design tips that can help get your creative juices flowing.

cozy reading nook with comfortable chair and flowers and cup of tea

This summer, consider taking your beach reads indoors. At Star, we believe the comfort of your home is the idyllic place to get lost in a great book - and sunscreen is not required. A well-designed reading nook can elevate the reading experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in captivating stories and unwind in a cozy atmosphere. This article explores five elements to help you create your ideal reading space, ensuring hours of comfortable reading and relaxation.

Take a Seat

Finding the right kind of reading chair for a cozy space is essential. Look for a chair that is both comfortable and supportive. It should have ample cushioning, a supportive backrest, and armrests at the right height for reading comfortably. Consider chairs that allow you to adjust the height and angle of your backrest for maximum comfort during extended reading sessions. Prioritize ergonomics and choose a chair that beckons you to dive into your favorite books.

Shine a Light

Proper lighting is essential for creating a cozy reading nook; it illuminates the page and sets the mood. Place your reading nook near a window to utilize natural light throughout the day. Invest in a high-quality reading lamp that provides focused and adjustable light. Consider what you read, whether you prefer physical books or digital e-readers like Kindles; then make sure the lighting is appropriate for your reading material. Backlit devices, such as e-readers and tablets, may require less additional lighting than traditional hard copies. Adequate lighting reduces eye strain and enhances the overall reading experience.

Keep a Good Table

A good reading nook is only complete with a side table. Choose a side table that complements your decor and provides enough surface area for a cup of tea, a glass of wine, a snack, or your ever-handy mobile phone. This convenient addition ensures that everything you need is within arm's reach, allowing you to indulge in uninterrupted reading sessions. With a well-equipped side table, you can savor your reading experience without constantly interrupting it for necessities.

Shelf It

For avid readers, a bookshelf is more than just a storage solution—it's a trophy case displaying their literary treasures. Incorporate a bookshelf into your reading nook. Choose a design that fits your overall look. Arrange your books in an appealing, orderly manner. Add personal touches like decorative bookends to make your bookshelf a more organized space. Well-curated bookshelf appeals to a room and helps create the perfect place to enjoy your reading adventures.

Star’s pro tip: Look for bookshelf options that feature storage solutions, such as drawers and cabinets. That way, you can use the bookshelf as both a decorative and functional piece in your reading nook.

Climb Into Bed

A good book may help you fall asleep, but reading in bed simply isn’t great for your posture. Consider investing in an adjustable bed, which offers a range of ergonomic positions and supports your back and neck as you read. Look for adjustable headrests or lumbar support features in a model. These will ensure that you can lose yourself in the pages of a book without sacrificing comfort. Create a comfy reading nook by matching your adjustable bed with a bedside table.

Design a Cozy Reading Nook with Star Furniture

Creating a comfortable, cozy reading nook requires carefully considering the most important elements for an enjoyable book-reading experience. By incorporating a comfortable reading chair, proper lighting, a side table for your reader's essentials, a bookshelf to showcase your literary treasures, and even exploring the option of an adjustable bed, you can create a haven for literary escapades in your own home.

Transform your reading nook into a cozy haven with Star Furniture. We offer a wide range of designer-approved elements to elevate your reading experience, from comfortable reading chairs to side tables and bookshelves that perfectly complement your space. woman working at desk in multifunctional room

A comfortable and accommodating guest room is essential for having friends and family over. However, in many cases, the guest room ends up sitting empty for large periods of time. The reality, however, is that there is so much potential for multifunctionality in the guest room! Read on to find out how to maximize and transform your guest room into a space that is useful in your everyday life while still attending to the needs of your visitors.

Change Your Mindset

Don't think of the guest room as a single purpose space. Sure, it's great to have a place for guests to stay when they visit, but you have the potential to turn that space into something you can use every day. Instead of focusing on the room as a guest room, consider how you can make that space into a multi use room that can accomplish many purposes in your home. Rename it in your mind. You might, for example, want to start considering it a "bonus room" or "multipurpose room" instead of thinking of it as a guest room. After all, your guests will ultimately get a lot less use out of it than you will!

Old Room, New Role

Once you've freed yourself of the narrow confines of a single purpose guest room, you can start to consider how that "new" space can actually be used. You can turn your guest room into anything you can imagine! If you had an extra room in your home, what would you do with it? That old "guest room" can become anything you can imagine.

A TV/Movie Room

With a large, blank wall, you can transform your bonus room into a TV or movie room where you can enjoy your movies in style. In order to set up a home theater space, consider what you love about going to the movies. Is it the comfortable seating where you can get cozy and settle in? Or perhaps the larger than life screen that makes you feel like you’re part of the action? Use this inspiration to create the home theater of your dreams.

A Yoga Studio

Have you been practicing yoga in a tight space in your living room or bedroom, often with just barely enough space to get your mat spread out on the floor? If you've been struggling to find adequate room, consider transforming your guest room into the yoga studio you've been dreaming of. Install a large mirror, clear out some floor space, and you'll have not only enough room to relax into a child's pose, but also enough room for your friends to join in!

A Home Gym

Gym memberships can get pricey, and why break the bank when you can set up a home gym in your guest room? To get started, consider the types of exercises you like to do at the gym. Which machines do you use the most often? If you find yourself drifting toward the same couple of cardio machines all the time, you'll find that it's easy to install them in your bonus room. To create a great home gym, you may need:

Once you've stocked your home gym, you're ready to go! Create an exercise plan and stick with it. Often, it's much easier to get in the great shape you've always dreamed of when everything you need is right there in your home gym.

Your Sewing or Craft Room

When you have a hobby like sewing or crafting, it doesn't take long for those items to start to take over. You may have stacks of fabric or boxes of yarn in your closet, so many that you may not always even know what you have on hand. You may have organizers full of crafting supplies: glitter, pretty paper, glue, and more. Many items, including sewing machines and cutting machines, take up a great deal of space. They also take a long time to haul out and set up time that you could be spending crafting!

Transforming your former guest room into a sewing or craft room is a great way to make the most out of that space. With some long tables set up and a few shifts in lighting, you can create a great room where you can get away to work on your favorite crafting projects. Better yet, you can leave your favorite machines and materials set up whether you're mid-project or not, which means that you won't have to waste any more time before you jump into your favorite creative pursuit. Having a dedicated crafting room may also mean that you can more easily organize your crafting supplies, which means no more buying three of the same color of yarn because you couldn't find it in the bottom of the box.

A Teen Hangout Room

If you have teens living at home, you know how quickly they can take over a space. You want your teens to feel comfortable having guests over, but you may also want to use your living room every once in a while. Turning that rarely used guest room into a teen room can allow your teens to hang out with friends at home in their own space without sacrificing your TV time. Consider adding a few games, including air hockey or a mini arcade game, or installing a TV that can be hooked up to your gaming systems. Add comfortable furniture and a few accents, and you'll have a gorgeous room that is perfect for teens to spend time in when they're hanging out at your house.

A Home Office Space

These days, more people than ever are working from home. Whether you're a full time remote worker or you work from home a couple of days a week, you need a dedicated space where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the house and focus on work and shut the door on work when the day comes to an end and you're ready to get back to the rest of your life. A corner desk can provide you with plenty of space to spread out across your desk, including room for multiple monitors and space so that you can still write on your desk. Add a comfortable desk chair, add a modern bookshelf, and you'll have a professional looking office space that will allow you to make the most of your time at home.

Using a guest room as home office space is nothing new. However, when you start to think of that bonus room as a multifunctional space, you'll find that it's easier to make room for your work, especially if you choose sleeping options for your guests that aren't taking up the entire floor.

Remember Your Guests

While you want to take full advantage of your bonus room space, after all, you will be using that space much more frequently than any visitor to your home! You do want to make sure that you remember your guests as you prepare your space. There are several options that will allow you to create a great space for your visitors to sleep without necessarily using the traditional boxy beds that take up most of the floor space in a room.

Sofa Sleepers

Most of the time, a sofa sleeper functions as comfortable seating in whatever room you have chosen. When it folds out, however, it becomes a bed for your guests. You can find sleeper sofas in a variety of sizes, including everything from twin size to king size, which means that you will have plenty of room for anyone who wants to visit without compromising on space in your guest room the rest of the time.

Murphy Beds

A Murphy bed is one of the most practical, space saving options available for making the most of your bonus room. When it's not in use, a Murphy bed folds up on the wall. When you want to use it for your guests, you can simply pull it down on the hinges that run along one side. If you intend to use a Murphy bed, you'll need to make sure that you have adequate space in the room to pull it down, including plenty of storage that will allow you to tuck away the items in the room that aren't in use when you have guests. This is where fold up treadmills and ellipticals in your home gym can really come in handy, since they can go from being bulky items that take up a lot of your floor space to slipping under the bed when it's folded down.

daybed with trundle

Daybeds with Trundle Options

A daybed like the Heartland Decorative Daybed tucks neatly against the wall and doesn't take up much space. With a trundle beneath, you can provide yourself with additional storage or a slide out bed that is perfect for guests with children. A daybed is also a beautiful way to add some seating in your room.

Futons

A futon is a great way to add both sleeping space and seating in your bonus room. When it's folded up, it's simply a sofa or seating space. When you fold it out, on the other hand, it can become a full bed for your guests. Many futon mattresses are more comfortable than ever, making them the ideal option for entertaining guests who will be staying with you for a few nights.

Twin Beds

If you want to provide your guests with a traditional sleeping option, consider offering two twin beds in the room. In their normal configuration, you can place them in an L shape, which means that they'll just take up one corner of the room, rather than the bulk of the space in the middle of the floor. With a little effort, you can move those twin beds together, creating a full size setup that will allow partners to sleep together or create more room for adult sleepers. Using two twin beds may also make it easier to accommodate guests when you have more than one person staying overnight.

Design a Versatile Guest Room at Star Furniture

Whether you've just moved into a new home and it has more space than you needed previously or you've been living in your home for a while and want to make more out of your bonus room, a few changes in design and a little creativity can help you make the most of every inch of that space. Take the time to dream about what you really want that space to be! In many cases, with some creative furniture wrangling, you can make that bonus room into a multipurpose space that can accommodate your visitors, your hobbies, and your work, all without needing to add on to your home.

glamourous living room with sofa and chairs positioned around coffee table

Have you ever looked at photos from award shows and longed for a little bit of that same glamourous Hollywood magic in your own home? Bringing a touch of the red carpet home can be an exciting way to add some show stopping glitz and glamour to your decor. Dialing up the glam factor at home is easier than you think. So, grab some popcorn and discover how you can make every corner dazzle with beautiful décor pieces and timeless designs.

1. Use Mirrors to Reflect & Elevate

Mirrors add a touch of glamour to any room, reflecting light and giving the illusion of more space. They can be framed or unframed, depending on the style you are looking for. For an Academy worthy look, try elegant frames in metallic hues like gold, copper, or brass. If you want something more modern, opt for frameless mirrors with beveled edges. Mirrors come in all sizes and shapes, so finding one that fits your design style is easy. Whether it is placed above the fireplace or hung in the hallway, adding a mirror will instantly give your home a luxurious feel.

2. Mix in Metalwork

Adding metals around your home is a great way to create an award winning look. Start with light fixtures like chandeliers and sconces, choosing ones with detailed metalwork for a hint of sophistication. You can also add metal accents to furniture pieces like side tables, chairs, and more. Try adding drawer pulls or handles in silver or gold finishes. If you want to go all out, try installing wall panels in brass or bronze for an eye catching statement piece. Metals are timeless and instantly bring your space up a notch with their luxurious shine.

3. Dress Up Your Space with Fab Fabrics

Textiles can be used to add warmth and glamour to any room in your home, think velvets, faux furs, silks, and other sumptuous materials. Velvet is one of the most popular choices for a luxe look, and you can find many pieces in solid colors or textured patterns. Faux fur throws are another great option for adding texture, while silks and satins can be used to create elegant window treatments. Look for textiles that feature metallic finishes like gold or silver threading for an extra glamourous touch.

4. Add Statuary for Dramatic Flair

If you want to add a sense of drama and grandeur to your space, statuary is the way to go. Start by selecting sculptures that fit your design aesthetic, think modern abstracts, classical busts, or classic statues in bronze or stone. You can also opt for wall art with a metallic finish, like a gilt frame or an ornate mirror. Statuary pieces can be displayed on mantels, side tables, and other surfaces for a unique look that will add A-list glamour to your home.

5. Tailor Upholstery to Perfection

Upholstery is another way to make your space feel luxurious. Look for traditional tailoring techniques like tufting, channeling, dressmaker skirts, welting, and fringe, all of which add texture and depth to furniture pieces. You can also choose luxe fabrics like velvet or leather for the ultimate dreamy look. For a modern twist, try incorporating bold colors or metallic finishes into the design.

6. Fine Veneers and Glossy Finishes

Choosing fine veneers and glossy finishes is a great way to add a touch of sophistication to your home. Try installing crown molding or wainscoting with a glossy finish, or opt for furniture pieces with high gloss veneers like lacquer, polyester, or acrylic. You can also find decorative accessories like picture frames and mirrors with polished brass or silver plated finishes.

Boho Chic Headboard in Cozy Bedroom

What could be more hopeful than the promise of a new year? Many people make a promise to better themselves through exercise, reading goals, and creative projects, but why not use this opportunity to better your life by bettering your home? In today’s blog, the interior design experts at Star Furniture discuss some creative new year’s resolutions for your home.

Choose a Room to Upgrade Throughout the Year

White L-Shaped Sectional in Trendy Living Room

When it comes to new year’s resolutions, it can be easy to bite off more than you can chew. And many of us do the same thing when we decide it’s time to refresh our homes. That’s why one of our favorite creative new year’s resolutions for your home involves choosing one room and using the whole year to make your upgrades. If, for example, you want to upgrade your living room, you might start by painting the walls. Then, over the course of the year, you can continue purchasing items like a new sectional sofa, a new coffee table, and other living room furniture and décor. Then, by the end of the year, you’ll have completely transformed the room.

Start Decluttering with Storage Furniture

A couch, two storage ottomans, and a storage bench

While decluttering your home may be one of the most common new year’s resolutions, that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative with how you do it. Rather than focusing on storage containers, we recommend finding the right storage furniture for each room in your house. A storage bench, for example, can pull double duty in your mudroom, bedroom, or living room. Not only is it a convenient place to sit, but it can also hold blankets, reading materials, and other items you want out of sight.

Set Up Your Bedroom for Better Sleep

Want another great spin on one of the most common new year’s resolutions? Try setting up your bedroom for better sleep. Not sure how to get started? Check out our guide to how to set up your bedroom for better sleep. Large Living Room with Leather Sectional

Looking for large living room ideas for your home? In today’s blog, we discuss how to decorate a large living room so that it feels cozy, functional, and stylish.

Choose Oversized Furniture

Furniture scale is incredibly important when decorating your living room. When decorating a large living room, you’ll want to choose large or oversized furniture pieces. Oversized furniture is one of our favorite large living room ideas because it makes the room feel cozy and comfortable. Try utilizing extra-large sectional sofas with a chaise lounge, large coffee tables, and other furniture pieces that take up more space and make the room feel full and functional.

Float Your Furniture

Looking for large living room layout ideas? Try floating your furniture away from the wall. Not only does floating furniture create better traffic flow for your living room, but it also can create a space that feels cozy, intimate, and intentional. Plus, floating your furniture automatically creates distinct zones, which can be especially helpful now as we try to make our space serve multiple purposes.

Divide the Room

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have had to adjust the way they use the space in their home. Visually dividing the room is one of our favorite large living room ideas, not just because it makes the room feel cozier, but because it allows you to better adjust your space to your needs. Think about how you might use the room. If, for example, you find yourself working from home, creating a small remote workspace in your large living room can help fill the room and create a functional space to use.

Double-Up on Accents

Looking for innovative ways to decorate a large living room? Try doubling up on accent furniture. Push two identical coffee tables together, purchase two of the same accent chairs to mirror each other, or double up on cocktail ottomans, wall art, or end tables. Not only will the symmetry look great, but the extra accent furniture can help the room feel less empty.

Living Room with Blue Accent Chair

If you don’t know much about interior design, it can be hard to mix and match your furniture into one coherent look. But that doesn’t mean you’re destined to only buy complete furniture sets. In today’s furniture blog, we answer some of your home décor questions and discuss how to coordinate furniture the right way.

Does Furniture Have to Match?

It depends on what you mean by the word ‘match.’ Generally speaking, all of the furniture in a specific room should complement each other. Many people buy furniture sets, like a dining set that comes with a table and matching chairs. While sets are designed to work together, they aren’t the only option. Your furniture can “match” without coming from the same set and without the kinds of similarities that are usually seen in many furniture sets, i.e. similar finishes, upholstery, colors, detailing, etc.

Do Accent Chairs Have to Match?

Yes and no. By nature, accent chairs stand out from the other furniture in the room. That said, there should be some connection between your accent furniture and the other furniture in the room. If, for example, you’re decorating a living room with a beige sofa, you may choose an accent chair that’s a color featured on one of the couch’s throw pillows. Similarly, if your home is decorated in the modern interior design style, you’ll want to choose an accent chair with modern features that mimic certain characteristics and complement the other furniture in the living room.

How to Coordinate Furniture?

When it comes to coordinating furniture, it’s important to see the big picture. Matching, in this case, just involves choosing complementary colors, styles, textures, silhouettes, etc., so that the furniture works well together in the room. If you decide not to choose a furniture set, you’ll need to pinpoint certain characteristics of your décor and find ways to complement them. Generally speaking, you should limit your color palette, pay attention to scale, choose a couple of wood finishes, and stick to a singular theme or style. You wouldn’t, for example, want to pair an oversized, traditional armoire with a sleek, modern couch.

Guest Bedroom ideas

While fewer people will likely be travelling this holiday season, many people will might still be hosting houseguests for the holidays. In today’s interior design blog, we discuss guest room essentials and how to upgrade your guest room.

Choose the Right Bed

When it comes to guest room essentials, a guest bed is pretty high up on the list. Depending on the type of guests you’re expecting over the course of the year, there are different bed set-ups to choose from. Queen-sized and king-sized bed frames work well for couples, but if you’re expecting uncoupled guests or children, you might be better off with multiple twin beds or trundle beds. Choosing daybeds or sleeper sofas for your guest room can also be a great option, as they offer versatility—a great place to sleep and a great seating option for the waking hours.

Upgrade Your Mattress

Well-rested houseguests are happy houseguests and having a reliable mattress in your guest room can make the experience more enjoyable for everyone involved. Star Furniture has mattresses in an array of sizes, types, and brands, including everything from memory foam mattresses to more affordable innerspring mattress options. Plus, all mattresses over $999 come with free shipping on your whole order. If a new guest room mattress isn’t in the budget, you might consider moving your old mattress to the bedroom and buying a new mattress for yourself. Either way, Star Furniture has completely revolutionized the mattress buying experience to help you find the perfect fit for your needs.

Offer Extra Seating

If you have the space and budget, offering extra bedroom seating can be incredibly enticing for guests, especially if they want to have some alone time away from the action. Some of our favorite guest bedrooms have accent chairs or bedroom benches so visitors can relax and enjoy some quiet time during their stay. As far as guest room essentials go, having someplace to sit can be especially important for older guests who might need a comfortable surface for putting on their shoes.

Don’t Skimp on the Storage Space

Even if you decide not to have full-sized dressers in your guest room, having some storage space can make guests feel more at home. Try using nightstands with drawers as bedside tables, which double as clothing storage and a convenient surface next to the bed.  You could also consider putting a desk or vanity in the room so your guests will have space to get ready. Looking for small guest room ideas for storage? We love the idea of installing hooks for hanging luggage, coats, and other clothing items out of the way.

Pay Attention to the Details

Personalizing your guest room and paying special attention to the details can make it feel even more warm and homey for your visitors. We recommend hanging a mirror, wall art, or other decorations to make the room feel cozy. You might even consider having an extra television in the room. When it comes to what things to have in a guest bedroom, there are certain guest room essentials that can make the room cozy, convenient, and functional. Make sure to have a clock, wastebasket, blankets, hand sanitizers, and tissue readily available. You can even leave some of their favorite snacks, teas, or toiletries for them to enjoy during their visit.

Reading Nook with Recliner

With people spending more and more time at home, DIY home projects are on the rise. Not only are people looking to create more unique spaces for themselves, but they’re also trying to find ways to bring their own hobbies indoors. In today’s blog, the interior design experts discuss how to make a cozy reading nook in your home.

Pick the Perfect Spot

When designing a reading nook for adults or kids, the first thing to consider is placement. First, you need to figure out where you have space. Reading nooks can be found in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, or porches, so there’s no right or wrong location. From there, you need to decide where it will fit in the room. Some of our favorite reading nook ideas capitalize on room corners, window seats, alcoves, or even closets. From there, you can personalize the space to make it fit your personality and needs. Choose a spot that makes sense for you and move forward from there.

Choose the Right Seating

Seating is perhaps the most important decision you’ll make when designing your reading nook. Choose from options like a chaise lounge, an accent chair, a rocker recliner, or a loveseat. Whatever style of seating you decide on, make sure you’ll be comfortable with an open book. You’ll want to consider a few factors, including:

  1. Firmness: Can you see yourself being comfortable for long periods of time—potentially many hours? If the answer is no, you may find yourself spending less time relaxing and more time fidgeting.
  2. Arm Support: Depending on your typical posture and preferred reading position, will the seating arrangement provide adequate support to hold a book for long reading sessions? Sure, the average book only weighs about a pound, but a page-turner held for hours can still be uncomfortable, without support.

Create the Right Ambiance

Your reading nook should be a cozy sanctuary from the world, so make sure you create the right ambiance. The first step is to consider color. Choosing the right color palette for your reading nook can make all the difference. Then consider the natural light in the room. Reading in the dark can be bad for your eyes, so think about upgrading the lighting with a floor or table lamp. You’ll also want to consider book storage. For a reading nook that reflects you and your personal style, we recommend displaying your books on a decorative bookcase for all to see.

Make Comfort a Priority

One of our favorite reading nook ideas is to outfit your reading nook with soft materials. Start with comfortable seating and then focus on the accessories, including everything from throw pillows to blankets and everything in between. Looking to really relax? A weighted blanket may be just what you need to take your reading nook to the next level.

Modern-Quartz 5-Piece Round Dining Room Set

Not every home has the space for a large formal dining room, but that doesn’t mean you can’t decorate a small dining room that fits your unique lifestyle. In today’s blog, our furniture experts cover how to decorate a small dining room using some of our favorite interior decorating ideas.

Choose the Right Dining Set

Start by choosing the right table for your small dining room. Generally speaking, round tables take up less physical space than square and rectangular tables, making them one of our favorite small dining room decorating ideas.

But don’t just focus on size. While it’s true you’ll likely want a small dining table if you’re dealing with a small dining room, there are other important considerations. Folding and extendable tables, for example, can be a great option for anyone looking to save space in their dining room without losing out on seating you might need when entertaining guests.

Want your room to appear bigger? Glass tables can give the illusion of space, making the room feel bigger and more open. If you do decide to go with a rectangular dining table, you might consider pushing the table against the wall and utilizing bench seating, as benches can accommodate more people and can be easily pushed under the table and out of the way when not in use.

Think Bright

Looking for small dining room decorating ideas that won’t break the bank? Start by considering what colors make a room look bigger. Light colored walls are more reflective of natural and artificial light, which makes the room appear larger and more open. You can even hang accent mirrors across from lights and windows to better reflect the light and add depth and the illusion of extra space to your dining room.

Install Wall Shelves

While buffet servers, curio cabinets, and hutches can be a great source of dining room storage, if you’re having trouble fitting these pieces in your small dining room, it may be time to consider floating wall shelves. Not only can they be customized to fit your needs, but they also take up less space, which prevents your small dining room from feeling cramped.
