grey sofa in contemporary living room setup, complete with coffee table and chair

Not all pieces of furniture are created equally. Some will get significantly more attention and use than others, such as your sofa. Because sofas are a staple furnishing in any home and will likely be used every day year after year, it's worth taking your time when shopping for a new one. If you're ready to buy a new piece of furniture that will serve your family well for years to come, the trusted designers at Star Furniture can help you navigate the many options while keeping the process simple and fun.

The first step in your journey to the perfect sofa is deciding whether you'd like to purchase one that's ready-made or custom-made. Both options come with their own benefits and disadvantages. Ready-made sofas are the kind that you can find on the furniture showroom floor. Custom-made sofas are available in a variety of different options, but are not usually available to be seen in person before purchasing.

When it comes to choosing between a ready-made or customized sofa, there's no one right or wrong choice. Only you can determine which option would be the best fit for your individual needs and when you choose a trusted retailer like Star Furniture, you can't go wrong with either choice. If you're unsure about whether a ready-made or custom sofa is right for you, ask yourself these questions before stopping by Star Furniture to get your shopping experience off to a great start.

Can I truly envision what my custom sofa will look like?

One of the biggest concerns that should be carefully considered when deciding whether or not to purchase a custom sofa is whether you can truly envision what the sofa will look like. Remember, you won't be seeing the custom sofa in person before making a purchase decision. There are many factors that go into building a sofa from the ground up that many people take for granted when looking at ready-made options, such as arms, legs, fabric, etc. If you're leaning toward going with a custom sofa, here are some options that can impact the way your sofa looks and feels:

The answers to these questions can vary from brand to brand in terms of what options are available. Fortunately, some brands have visualization tools that can make getting an idea of what your custom sofa will look like easier. Still, it's important to remember that you won't be seeing (or sitting on) the exact sofa you're going to buy until it's been made.

Should I put my hand up and get help from a design pro?

Working with an experienced designer is a wise decision when making any significant furniture purchase, especially when you're considering what type of custom sofa is right for you. Interior designers have years of knowledge and training in navigating the endless options of upholstery, styling, materials, and more. This is sure to be an invaluable resource when it's time for you to decide what type of sofa you need.

Along with guiding you in the direction of sofas that will mesh with your current home decor style, design experts can make recommendations about how to create a sofa that will be durable, comfortable, and practical for your family's unique lifestyle. Additionally, they'll be able to assist you in areas where you may be a bit confused, such as which type of material to use in the frame of the sofa or which cushion filling is best for you. Bottom line? You don't have to figure out how to order a custom sofa alone. Working with a Star Furniture designer will take the guesswork out of decorating.

Am I willing to wait?

Every home decor project has a timeline. While some are less expeditious, others must be accomplished as quickly as possible. Of course, your particular timeline could have an impact on whether you're able to order a custom-made sofa or if you should stick with one that's ready to take home immediately or in a short time frame. Because custom pieces are made just for you, they take a while to fabricate. Lead times can vary anywhere from 8-20 weeks. If you're not in a hurry to bring home the sofa of your dreams, a custom-made one could be a wonderful option. However, if you're in need of a new sofa right away or are trying to redecorate an area of your home as quickly as possible, a ready-made sofa is probably a better choice for your needs.

At Star Furniture, we're proud to provide a curated selection of customized sofas as well as ones that are ready-made, many that are in stock and ready to ship out right away. If you think that you have to compromise style or quality when purchasing a ready-made sofa instead of a custom one, think again. The quality of our ready-made sofas is excellent, often on par with custom sofas. You truly can't go wrong either way.

Can I budget a bit more to get exactly what I want?

We all know there's great value to getting exactly what you want. That's the biggest benefit of a custom sofa. Because custom sofas are one-of-a-kind and made just for you, they are generally more expensive than their ready-made cousins. While prices vary across brands and will change depending on the specific features that you'd like, you can expect to pay a bit more for a custom sofa than one that's ready-made. Having an idea of how much money you're willing to spend on a new sofa before you begin looking will keep your furniture shopping experience smooth and simple.

If you’re working with a budget, choosing a ready-made sofa may be the best option to ensure that you go home with a quality piece at just the right price. If pricing isn’t an important factor for you, a custom-made sofa can help you get your ideal sofa in terms of appearance, functionality, and comfort. Remember, your sofa will have a tremendous impact on the overall style and comfort of your home. Treat it as an investment and you'll be thankful you did!

Should I consider additional custom upholstery pieces?

Once you’ve decided to purchase a custom-made sofa, you may be eager to invest in other custom pieces. Brilliant idea! Pairing your new sofa with other pieces that are tailored to your liking, such as armchairs, a loveseat, or an ottoman, is a great way to complete the look of any space in your home. While ready-made pieces can help give your living spaces a much-needed upgrade, it's hard to beat the thoughtful style that comes with customizing individual pieces of furniture for a particular area of your home. Best of all, you can use these custom pieces to reflect your unique style. Upholstery isn't the only thing that can be customized. Stop by Star Furniture to speak with our design team about our other living room furniture available for custom order. You won't believe how beautiful, cozy, and uniquely “you”  your home can be with personalized home decor.

A well-styled sofa promotes a cohesive and welcoming living room look. There are several elements of sofa design that can help guide you through the styling process. In this article, our Star expert Dean will walk through four sofa styling tips that anyone can do. Dean is an experienced interior designer who has recently shifted to the buying world. As our newest upholstery buyer, he is passionate about design and we are lucky to have his expertise at Star!

Dean agrees - a few thoughtful sofa styling decisions can go a long way. As a bonus, the tips below will not only help improve the look of your sofa, but also help to keep you comfortable and warm when lounging on it.

1. Be Intentional About Layout

Sofas and sectionals don't have to be placed against walls — especially if your home has an open-concept living area. Dean recommends getting creative when planning your layout, and using your sofas to divide the room into zones. Your sofa can break up a large living space, add structure to an open-concept area, and make the room a more intentional space.

2. Pillows Add Pop

Pillows are perfect for adding color, personality and comfort to your sofa or sectional. As Dean suggests, select throw pillows with geometric patterns to create an updated look in your living room. Alternatively, go with solid colored pillows that complement the hues in a patterned area rug. Make sure the colors and patterns you choose coordinate with the room as a whole.

When deciding on placement for your pillows, position larger pillows towards the corners of your sofa or sectional. Then, embellish those pillows with smaller ones. When it comes to pillow arrangement, the idea is to create a full, balanced look. Use this guide to decide on the number of pillows to go with depending on sofa size:

3. Just Add Texture

Add texture and a splash of color to your sectional by draping a throw blanket over the back or over an arm. Pick a throw that's soft and plush, keeping in mind that you’ll want to be able to use the blanket on chilly nights. Dean advises sticking to a solid-colored throw if your pillows are patterned to avoid clashing. When deciding on color, consider the effects of color on the mind. For example, the color orange is associated with feelings of warmth and kindness, while green suggests freshness and growth.

For a clean, traditional look, neatly fold your throw into a long, rectangular shape. Then, drape the throw over the back on your sofa for a simple, understated look. For a more organic look, pinch the throw at its center and pull it over the back of your sofa. This technique will give a more relaxed, undone look.

4. Make Seasonal Adjustments

Just because our sofas and sectionals don’t change with the four seasons doesn’t mean our accents can’t! Introduce festive pillows and throws that celebrate certain seasons and holidays. For a more thrifty option, find seasonal covers that fit over your everyday sofa pillows and can easily be changed with each holiday.

Design Your Dream Sofa or Sectional with Star

Sofas and sectionals don't have to look simple and drab. With a few thoughtful changes, it's easy to dress up your furniture to perfectly complement your living space. Visit one of our stores to shop for the perfect sofa or sectional for your home. Our associates would be happy to help you find something that meets your needs and matches your home decor best.

Chaise Sectional in a Living Room

Considering buying a sectional? This sectional sofa guide covers everything you need to know about how to choose a sectional for your living room.

What is a Sectional Sofa?

Sectional couches or sofas are sofas that are composed of two or more pieces that come together to form a single unit. Most sectional sofas range from 2 pieces to as many as 6 pieces, and they can either be fixed, meaning they fit together in only one configuration, or modular, which means they can be combined together in a number of different ways. Generally speaking, the more pieces, the more expensive the sectional will be, though reclining features and certain upholsteries can also increase the price.

Left Facing Sectional Meaning

Left Facing Sectional Sofa

Different sectional sofa pieces are typically described as either left facing or right facing, depending on their orientation. To determine whether a chaise lounge is left or right facing, stand facing the lounge. If the sofa arm is on the left, you’re looking at a left facing chaise sectional piece.

Right Facing Sectional Meaning

Right Facing Sectional Sofa

To determine whether a sectional sofa piece is left facing or right facing, stand facing the piece in question. If the sofa arm is on the right side, you’re looking at a right facing sectional piece. In modular sectionals, some pieces of sofa might not have arms and would not be described as either left or right facing.

Sectional Vs. Sofa: Why Choose a Sectional?

Choosing between a traditional sofa and a sectional? Here are the benefits of choosing a sectional sofa when decorating your living room.

Extra Seating

Most sectional sofas provide more seating than a regular sofa. While smaller sectionals might have the same amount of seating as a large sofa, they often have chaise lounges or other flourishes that provide more versatility and comfort. Large sectionals are great for entertaining guests, as they’re naturally arranged in a way where people can easily converse from different parts of the sofa.

More Versatility

While many people assume that sectional sofas are only for decorating large living rooms, they’re actually more versatile than you might think. If you’re decorating a small living room or study, try placing the sectional sofa in the corner to maximize space.

A Dash of Style

Especially if you’re dealing with an open floor plan, sectional sofas can help create a distinct room within a room. Not only do they help break up the room, but they also offer a unique style all their own.

Popular Sectional Shapes & Types

Sectionals come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and styles, which means there’s a sectional sofa out there for everyone. Here are some of the most popular sectional shapes and designs.

L-Shaped Sectionals

White Casual L-Shaped Sectional Sofa

(Pictured Above: Trisha Yearwood Atlanta 2-Piece Sectional Sofa)

L-shaped sectionals are perhaps the most popular sectional shape. As their name suggests, L-shaped sectionals form two lines that come together at a right angle, with one end extending longer than the other end.

Chaise Sectionals

Black Leather Chaise Sectional

(Pictured Above: Dino Leather Sofa Chaise Sectional)

Like L-shaped sectionals, chaise sectionals also form an L shape, though rather than having two pieces that form a right angle, the chaise lounge is attached to one side of the sectional. In modular sofas, chaise pieces can be added to other sectional pieces to create a wide range of shapes.

Curved Sectionals

Modern Curved Sectional Sofa

(Pictured Above: Greta 2-Piece Curved Sectional)

Curved sectionals take advantage of curved lines, creating a sectional that’s rounded, rather than having sharp corners. They’re especially great for entertaining, as everyone can have their own space while still being positioned perfectly for conversation. While curved sectionals look unique and stylish, they’re not great for small spaces, as the curved back prevents you from pushing it against the wall.

U-Shaped Sectionals

U-Shaped Sectional Sofa

(Pictured Above: Gotham 3-Piece U-Shaped Sectional)

If you’re looking for a large sectional to fit a big room, a U-shaped sectional might be right for you. As the name implies, U-shaped sectionals extend outward on both sides, which makes them great for entertaining, as the U-shape naturally accommodates conversation for people on either side of the couch. Many u-shaped sectionals feature a large ottoman in the middle so people can put their feet up.

Symmetrical Sectionals

Beige Godfrey Symmetrical Sectional Couch

(Pictured Above: Godfrey 3-Piece Symmetrical Sectional)

Like L-shaped sectionals, symmetrical sectionals have two pieces that meet to form a right angle. Unlike L-shaped sectionals, symmetrical sectionals are the same length in either direction. Because of this, they offer a bit more seating space than traditional L-shaped sectionals, while still providing the same multifunctionality that makes sectionals so appealing in the first place.

Sleeper Sectionals

Sleeper Sectional

(Pictured Above: Selena 2-Piece Sleeper Sectional)

Whether you’re looking to furnish a living room or a home office guest room combo, a sleeper sectional combines all of the seating options of a sectional with the comfortable sleeping options of a sleeper sofa. Sleeper sectionals can come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, making them a great option for people who want to take advantage of the dual purpose of the sleeper sectional.

Reclining Sectionals

Reclining Leather Sofa

(Pictured Above: Cooper Leather 6-Piece Leather Reclining Sectional)

Reclining sectionals are sectionals that feature one or more seats that recline. In general, reclining sofas tend to be larger in size, though they come in a wide range of styles. Because of their large size and reclining functionality, reclining sectionals are great for family rooms and home theaters, and many reclining power sectionals include tray tables, cup holders, built-in storage consoles, and even USB charging ports.

Modular Sectionals

Modular Sectional Sofa

(Pictured Above: Shearson 4-Piece Modular Sectional Sofa)

Modular sectionals are sectionals that come with multiple types of individual pieces, which you can mix and match into a wide range of configurations. If you’re furnishing an oddly shaped room, modular sectionals can be great, because you don’t necessarily need to arrange them into one solid entity. Instead, you can use different sections as stand-alone pieces. You can even easily rearrange the sectional pieces when entertaining guests for more versatility.

How to Choose a Sectional?

Wondering how to choose a sectional that fits your lifestyle, interior design style, and room dimensions? Here’s how to get started.

Consider your Budget

When choosing a sectional, it’s important to look for affordable sectionals in your specific price range. Remember, there are certain factors that will almost certainly add to the price. Power reclining sectionals, for example, will likely have a higher price tag than stationary sectionals of the same size. Material will also make a difference, as will the size. In general, the more pieces included in a sectional sofa, the more expensive it will be.

That said, if a sectional sofa will replace other seating in the house, make sure to factor that into your decision. A large sectional sofa, for example, might alleviate the need for a loveseat, so make sure to take that into account when figuring out your specific sectional budget. At Star Furniture, we have a huge collection of affordable sectionals for every price range, and you can easily sort our sectional inventory by price range so you aren’t tempted to overspend.

Consider the Size & Shape of the Room

Unfortunately, it’s not just about the most affordable couch that looks the best and fits your lifestyle. You also have to consider the size and shape of the room the sectional will go in. Before you purchase a sectional, make sure you’ve measured the room and compared it to the dimensions of the sofa. You can even use our free room planner tool to see how different sectionals would look in a room of your size and shape. Wondering what size sectional for your room? Follow these general rules:

Pay Attention to Spacing

Your sectional sofa should not occupy the entire length of the wall and there should be at least 18 inches of space on either side of the sectional. This will help with traffic flow and will keep the room from feeling overstuffed.

Be Thoughtful with Chaise Placement

If your sectional sofa features a chaise lounge, you’ll want to consider putting the chaise on the side with the least amount of traffic to prevent yourself from having to constantly walk around it. You also don’t want the chaise to extend out more than halfway across the room.

Don’t Block Architectural Features

When considering different ways to arrange a sectional, make sure to avoid blocking architectural features like fireplaces, windows, or built-in shelving. Not only will placing the sectional in front of the features block them from view, but it can also make it impossible to start a fire or easily access the items on your shelves.

Consider the Function

If you’re familiar with the interior design rule “function over form,” you know that one of the most important aspects of a piece of furniture is how you plan to use it. Think about the room your sectional couch will occupy. What is that room most often used for? If you like to frequently entertain guests, for example, you’ll want to choose a sectional with extra seating. If you like to sprawl out while watching Netflix, you might want to consider a sectional with a chaise lounge. During this step, it’s important to think about how you will actually use the room, not how you hope you’ll use the room.

Consider Furniture Scale

When choosing a sectional, it’s important to consider furniture scale. In design, furniture scale refers to the width, height, and length of your furniture. As a general rule of thumb, you’ll want all of the furniture in the room to be proportional to one another. If, for example, you have a small, modern loveseat and coffee table, you might not want to choose a huge, overstuffed sectional. You should also consider the height of your sectional.

The scale of your furniture is often determined by the interior design style you’ve chosen to decorate your home, but it can also be determined by the size and shape of the room. If you have tall ceilings, for example, a low profile sectional may look insignificant in the room.

Consider Your Interior Design Style

Another important factor when choosing a sectional is the interior design style of your décor. While a traditional style sectional might have a larger scale with a more ornate silhouette, a modern sectional will likely feature a minimalist silhouette and low profile. While many sectional couches fall into a more neutral, transitional furniture style, you will want to consider interior design style when choosing your sectional.

Different Ways to Arrange a Sectional

Looking for living room layout ideas for sectional sofas? These ideas for different ways to arrange a sectional might help.

Remove Competing Furniture

Sectionals are often larger than other types of sofas, so if you’re planning to put a sectional in your living room, you’ll want to try to simplify the rest of the furniture in the room. You might, for example, get rid of some of the end tables and floor lamps in the room so it doesn’t feel cramped, opting instead for a large coffee table or ottoman and overhead lighting.

Take Advantage of Walls

While floating furniture is often best practice when decorating a living room, with a sectional, you might be better off utilizing at least one wall. If you have an open floor plan, try having one side of your sectional against the wall. If you’re decorating a small living room, you might even want to put the corner of the sectional against the corner of the room, with the sectional pushing up against two walls for maximum traffic flow.

Consider Focal Points

Many living room layouts center around one or more focal points. While the focal point can be anything from a fireplace or a television to an accent wall or a picture window, one living room layout tip is to make sure the sectional sofa honors the rooms focal point. If, for example, the focal point is the television, the sectional should go wherever the most people would be able to see the television screen.

What to Look for When Buying A Couch?

There’s so much to consider when buying a couch. From size and upholstery to style and shape, many factors will influence your decision about which couch to choose. Here’s what to consider when buying a couch, so you’ll know you’re making an informed decision that will keep paying off for years to come.

Sofa Size

Sofa sizes vary. If you’re furnishing a small space, it might make more sense to choose a loveseat or smaller sofa. If you like to entertain, you might consider choosing an L-shaped large sectional. Here are some different types of sofas you may want to consider, depending on your size needs.

Loveseats

Leland Brown Leather Loveseat

(Pictured Above: Leland Brown Leather Loveseat)

A loveseat is a small sofa that will comfortably seat two people. While loveseats vary in size, they generally tend to be around 35 inches deep by 60 inches wide. Loveseats can come in a variety of shapes, styles, and upholsteries, so you won’t have to sacrifice style or comfort. In fact, Star Furniture even carries power reclining loveseats!

Sofas

Omni 3-Seat Fabric Sofa

(Pictured Above: Omni 3-Piece Sofa)

While standard sofas vary in size, they tend to be between loveseats and sectionals in size. 3-seat sofas are most common, and sofas tend to range from 2-4 seats. Because conventional sofas are the most popular couch type, you’ll find a wide selection of shapes, styles, and upholsteries for every budget.

Sectionals

Belle L-Shaped Sectional Sofa

(Pictured Above: Belle 2-Piece Sectional Sofa)

Sectional sofas, otherwise known as modular sofas, are composed of multiple sections that can be arranged in a number of different positions. Many people arrange their sectionals in an L-shape, which facilitates conversation and allows interior designers to take advantage of room corners. Chaise sectionals are also becoming increasingly popular, especially with families, as the chaise section allows people to spread out and lay down for maximum comfort.

Functionality

You might think that sofas are almost exclusively used for meeting basic seating needs, but there are additional functionalities that can be beneficial in a sofa.

Power Motion Sofas

Power motion sofas are sometimes called power reclining sofas. These sofas are plugged into a wall, and people can press a button to recline the sofa to various positions. In fact, many power motion sofas feature extra perks, like the ability to adjust headrests and foot rests, massage capabilities, and charging ports for charging your cell phone or plugging in a heating pad. As technology advances and demand increases, you’ll now find a selection of power motion loveseats, sofas, and sectionals, which means you can take advantage of power motion, regardless of what size sofa you’re looking for.

Sleeper Sofas

Whether you’re furnishing a home office guest bedroom combo or simply wanting to create some space room in your living room for guests to sleep, sleeper sofas provides a comfortable sofa by day and a pull-out bed by night. Because of their dual functionality, some people find sleeper sofas a less comfortable alternative to both sofas and traditional mattresses, but sleeper sofas are more comfortable than ever, and the space saving really pays off.

Sofa Upholstery

People have different upholstery wants and needs for their sofas. While some people prefer the durability and elegance of leather, others prefer the look and feel of fabric sofas or the unique style of velvet. Just be sure you understand the strengths and weaknesses of each kind of upholstery before you choose, especially if you’re looking for cat- and dog-friendly sofas.

Fabric Sofas

Carmen Fabric Sofa

(Pictured Above: Carmen Fabric Sofa)

This blanket term covers a variety of different types of fabrics, including everything from microfiber and wool to linen and polyester. With fabric sofas, you’ll have a wider range of color options, and depending on which fabric is used, there will be different pros and cons. Cotton, for example, is great for preventing wear, fading, and pilling, however, it can be easily stained and wrinkled. Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and vinyl are generally made to be wrinkle-, fade-, and stain-resistant, so while they have a less natural feel, they do provide a great deal of durability. Especially if you have pets, microfiber might be a good option, as it doesn’t rip or scratch easily, and pet hair can be quickly removed with a lint roller. In general, choosing a fabric with a tighter weave can also be helpful with pets.

Leather Sofas

Stockton Orange Leather Sofa

(Pictured Above: Stockton Leather Sofa)

Star Furniture is the leather leader in Texas, which means we have the biggest selection of leather sofas in the state. Not only do leather sofas have that classic, elegant look and feel, but modern processes make it more resistant to cracking, peeling, and sagging, making them more durable than ever. In fact, experts say that a leather sofa can last up to four times longer than a fabric couch. That’s because leather is tough but flexible, resisting punctures and tears, while also being resistant to spills and dirt. In fact, leather furniture can usually be cleaned with a quick wipe with a damp cloth. If you’re looking for pet-friendly options, leather sofas repel animal fur, but they can be scratched easily, which can alter the way your sofa looks.

Velvet Sofas

O'Neal Blue Velvet Sofa

(Pictured Above: O’Neal Blue Velvet Sofa)

Velvet furniture is one of the hottest interior design trends of the year and choosing a velvet sofa is a great way to show off your unique style. Not only can a velvet sofa serve as a bold conversation piece, but velvet looks great on a wide range of silhouettes, so you’re not stuck with limited options for sofa shape and size. Whether you decide to go with bold colors like a blue velvet sofa, or something a little more understated, velvet sofas can take your interior design to the next level.

Comfort

Unlike some of the other considerations, comfort is fairly objective. Consider your own person tastes. Do you like deep cushions that envelop you into the couch? Do you hate to sit on leather sofas in shorts? Do you prefer sofa arms to be tall or short? Take a moment to think about the most comfortable couch you’ve ever sat on. What characteristics did it have? What bothers you most about the couch you have now?

Because comfort is so subjective, it’s best to come into the furniture store to test out different couches. Don’t just sit down quickly and stand immediately back up. Try sitting in different positions for a few minutes at a time. Weather-permitting, wear shorts so you can feel the upholstery against your skin. Try sitting on every cushion and see how it feels to sit between cushions. Try resting your arm on the arm rests. It’s hard to know how you’ll feel about a sofa long-term, so be sure to be thorough when testing a sofa for comfort.

Sofa Shapes

Sofas come in a wide range of shapes and styles, and while many have their own unique flair, they often fit into popular categories. From chesterfield and tuxedo sofas to more classic English rolled arm sofas, understanding some of the most popular sofa shapes can help you determine your tastes.

Lawson Sofa

Madison Mist Lawson Sofa

(Pictured Above: Madison Mist Lawson Sofa)

Perhaps the most standard of the couch shapes, Lawson sofas tend to be designed with comfort in mind. Characterized by their three back cushions and square or slightly rolled low arms, you’ll find a wide variety of Lawson sofas with their own unique flair.

English Rolled Arm Sofa

Cabot Dark Leather Sofa

(Pictured Above: Cabot Leather Sofa)

If coziness is what you’re after, look no further than the English rolled arm sofa. They tend to have soft, oversized cushions, a tight back, and low turned legs on casters.

Chesterfield Sofa

Dalton Leather Chesterfield Sofa

(Pictured Above: Dalton Leather Chesterfield Sofa)

Popularized in the 18th century, chesterfield sofas have withstood the test of time. Once a symbol of noble sophistication, chesterfields still have an elegant appeal defined by their use of leather, rolled arms, tufting, lack of back cushions, and a back that’s the same height as the arms.

Tuxedo Sofa

Josie Tuxedo Sofa

(Pictured Above: Josie Tuxedo Sofa)

Like the chesterfield sofa, the tuxedo sofa also features arms that are the same height as the back of the couch. Unlike the chesterfield, the tuxedo couch is clean-lined and geometric, with a distinguished boxy shape. These sofas gained popularity in the 1920s and are now part of the modern furniture movement.

Bridgewater Sofa

Lily Bridgewater Sofa

(Pictured Above: Lily Bridgewater Sofa)

The Bridgewater sofa has a low profile and low arms that are oftentimes set back from the front of the sofa. More traditional Bridgewater sofas feature a skirt, which hides the legs of the couch, and they often have a rolled back.

Mid-Century Modern Sofa

Malone Mid-Century Modern Sofa

(Pictured Above: Malone Mid-Century Modern Sofa)

The mid-century modern sofa has been popularized in part by the show Mad Men. While the details can differ, mid-century modern sofas tend to have sleek lines, a rectangular shape, a tufted back, individual seat cushions, and solid, wood legs.

Sofa Style

Whether your interior design style is more modern, traditional, or transitional, Star Furniture & Mattress has a large selection of sofas in every style. Here’s what to look for in modern, traditional, and transitional sofas.

Modern Sofas

Jordan Leather Modern Sofa

(Pictured Above: Jordan Leather Sofa)

Love modern and contemporary style? Modern furniture has a wide-range of characteristics, including minimalism, straight lines, geometric shapes, and bold accent colors. Modern sofas tend to have square-edges, clean lines, natural materials and textures, and a focus on negative space.

Traditional Sofas

Topton Traditional Sofa

(Pictured Above: Topton Traditional Sofa)

Decorating your home in the traditional style? In general, traditional furniture decorating favors orderly furniture, which comes together to create a warm, homey living space. The furniture itself tends to feature rich wood tones, ornate detailing, lustrous accents, and symmetry. Traditional couches tend to feature plush fabrics, soft edges, and patterned upholstery.

Transitional Sofas

Madison Mist Lawson Sofa

(Pictured Above: Madison Mist Sofa)

Not set on a fully modern or traditional decorating style? Why not choose transitional furniture, which allows you to take advantage of the best of both worlds. Transitional furniture borrows elements from both traditional and modern contemporary design. Typically, you’ll see some combination of these characteristics: tone-on-tone palettes, complementary textures, a mixture of curvy and straight lines, and symmetry. Transitional sofas tend to have a medium scale, a warm and inviting look, and simple silhouettes.
